GRAIN NOTES
  May 21, 2013

The planting progress report released yesterday indicated that from May 13th-18th, US farmers planted 41.8 million acres of corn. In total 71% of the US corn crop is planted, which is still behind the 5 year average pace of 79% complete. The trade is expecting that another 15% will be planted this week leainge the final 14% to planted in the last week of May or first week of June. Certainly the market anticipates yield losses associated with this late plantings. In addition, acres may get switched to beans or fall into preventive planting which is May 31 for Wisconsin; which is one of the states well behind normal, 43% vs. 68%. The corn market traded lower most of the day, but corn recovered some with old crop down 10 cents and new crop was unchanged. Old crop beans were 13 cents higher while new crop was down 6. Old/new crop corn spreads collapsing as values approach 1996 levels. Bean spreads widening on tight old crop supplies, but basis fell sharply.
