New Fertilizer Plant Opens in Iowa

River Valley Cooperative was honored to have been an invited guest at Iowa Fertilizer Company’s opening ceremony of their new $3 billion facility in Wever, IA yesterday, April 19. Representing River Valley Cooperative were Tom Leiting, CEO/General Manager, and Jim Gruenhagen, Operations Vice President.

The project broke ground in late 2012 and employed more than 3,500 workers at its peak of construction. A full-time staff of more than 200 people will maintain the facility with an annual payroll of $25 million. It is estimated that the facility will produce 1.7 to 2.2 million tons of fertilizer products per year.

Tom Leiting snapped this picture as Nassef Sawiris, CEO of OCI N.V. (center) cuts the ceremonial ribbon assisted by Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad, Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds, and Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey, company officials and community leaders.
