What our interns say:

Andy White:
River Valley Cooperative provided me with a fun yet educational summer intern experience. Being a crop scout really gave me a hands on learning opportunity, which allowed me to incorporate my class work to the field. The best part about River Valley that I enjoyed most was that every day was different, from delivering products to farmers, tissue sampling, and scouting for weeds, insects and diseases, attending Answer Plots, and even touring other companies associated with River Valley. River Valley as a company and the employees are fun and educational to work for as you are taking your first step towards a career you desire.

Ben McDonald:
River Valley Cooperative was a great opportunity to broaden my agricultural outlook through crop science, customer relations, and Co-op management. This internship offers state of the art training by pairing up with Winfield Solutions; however, also provides a chance to stay close to home. Along with the extensive training, many Croplan answer plots where conducted by River Valley which helped me put action to what I saw in the field. As a matter of fact, I even got the chance to tour the Monsanto test plot in Monmouth Illinois which had technology 15 years in the making! Nevertheless, what I really enjoyed is that I partook in an ever-changing daily routine, which saved me from the boring “desk job.” Overall, the internship gave me great connections to many people in the agriculture industry, and I would highly recommend this internship for anyone looking to further their education in agriculture.

Chase Whitsell:

I learned a lot more this summer then I ever imagined I would. It was a great experience and I’m very glad I did it. I enjoyed riding in the sprayer and just working with the account managers.

Stuart McCulloh:
I was an agronomy intern for River Valley Cooperative during the summer of 2010 at the Eldridge Location. When I first got the internship, I was glad, but hoped that I wouldn’t just be a gopher and doing jobs that no one else really cared to do. I was wrong. Through my internship, I got the opportunity to be involved in almost every aspect of the Agronomy side of River Valley Cooperative. I was able to work with three really good account managers, and also with two operations people that were helpful with things as well. I always had someone at the office to ask a question, almost every time they had an answer for me. As a person I grew a lot being an employee for River Valley. I was constantly challenged with different scenarios, and always working to better myself. I honed my time management skills and was learning quicker and quicker every day. I genuinely felt that I was a part of something, and not just a worker. My co-workers were always asking how things went, and what I had come across or “ran into” out in the fields as a crop scout. By the end of the summer, I had established good relationships with everyone at the coop, and I have a lot of good connections.

I thought that being a crop scout would be the same old same old every week, but things changed and new challenges “crashed” into my life. I guess you could say everyday had a routine, but the routine always involved different things. My summer internship with River Valley Cooperative gave me a lot of field-based knowledge that I used at home on the farm, and have found useful in classes here in Ames. Book learning is good, but through my internship, I got hands on, field-based experience that I will always remember.

Joshua Stahl:
I enjoyed my summer internship at River Valley Cooperative. River Valley gave me a lot of opportunities to work in different areas of agriculture with most of the work being in the agronomy field. Through Answer Plots and a few trips to Monsanto I was able to learn many things about agronomy that I did not know that will help me in the future. I have always been around crops and agronomy and was very excited that I could learn more about this area of agriculture. I also had the opportunity to work with grain merchandising at the Galva location. It was neat to see how an elevator sees the market and what they do to make money. Going around with the different salespeople and seeing what they do and believe was educational to me.
I would like to thank River Valley for the opportunities they gave me this past summer and all the knowledge they gave me which will help me in the future.
